Tawnys differ from the ruby-red Ruby ports in that they are matured in smaller wooden barrels from the outset, i.e. with a little more oxygen contact, and therefore lose their depth of color (hence the name Tawny = tawny). They are usually somewhat softer, rounder and more restrained in their depth of fruit than the Rubys, and with their aroma of apricots and often brioche or fresh bread, they are more reminiscent of a mature red sweet wine. Due to the ageing in wood, the high alcohol and usually also sugar content, they also keep longer when opened, up to a month, in contrast to the Rubys, which should be drunk within a few days.
