2021 Raaigras Grenache

This is said to be the oldest Grenache vineyard in South Africa, and its 12 long rows are located on the Kalmoesfontein farm. The vineyard has an energy and presence about it. The vines are magnificent and low bearing. The soils are beautifully reflected in the wine, with a grainy, grippy tannin.
The grapes are carefully sorted in the vineyard and placed in small harvest crates in a refrigerated room where they cool overnight. The grapes are destemmed and fermented in a conical concrete tank, being pumped over once a day. When fermentation is almost complete, the vat is pressed and the must is transferred to 500-liter containers for 12 months. This wine was bottled without any filtration just before bottling.
