The Vintage Port 2019 is a field blend from old vines (80 to 100 years old) aged for 21 months in large Portuguese oak barrels. It has 88 grams of residual sugar per liter and 19.3% alcohol. This was determined around three months after bottling. In its own notes, the winery emphasizes balance and elegance, and this is certainly a fitting summary of this wine. Not to be forgotten, however, are the appealing aromas, interspersed with some eucalyptus, and the grippy finish. In addition, the texture is sensual and flattering on the palate. The fruit adds a wave of flavor. The wine finishes with a certain power and vibrancy, making it a good candidate for the cellar. However, the tannins are not too harsh and are well controlled. Its freshness will also stand it in good stead as it ages. If there is anything to criticize, it is certainly not the most concentrated Niepoort ever. Everything else, however, is super. This wine should have good ageing potential and be able to improve even further. It's worth noting that on the first day of tasting it was good, but not great. A few days later it was much more impressive, still dense, precise and concentrated. It's not quite at the level of the 2017, which I think had better fruit, but it's a good example of what the estate can do. There were 39,754 bottles produced, plus some half bottles and larger formats.
