Around 350 million years ago, a small stratovolcano (the Molkenrain) covered a large part of the Southern Vosges with volcanic ash, which eventually settled in the sea and was compacted into the dark heavy rocks (Grauwackes) that can be seen today in the Rangen Grand Cru. Rangen is located at the eastern end of this area, the only one where vines can be grown, which explains why this vineyard is so unique in the Alsatian landscape. The vineyard is extremely steep, as these rocks do not erode easily. However, they disintegrate over time and produce some very interesting superficial clays, which are so important for fixing minerals and humus. Young vines have a hard time growing in this rocky soil, but over time the roots can eventually reach these richer layers, adding complexity to the wines.
