A good 40 years have passed since Émile Peynaud, the father of modern oenology, expressed the opinion that the north-western Spanish region of Bierzo had one of the world's best terroirs for producing top wines. Now the time has finally come. A tiny band of oenologists has set out to confirm the old master's wise prediction and make the Mencía grape variety, which is native to Bierzo, internationally famous. Right at the forefront, and well on the way to becoming a real insider tip, is the tiny Finca Losada.
