2009 Robustus

Robustus is the wine that Dirk Niepoort made in recognition of the first wine he made in 1990, which was never released. The idea was essentially based on great traditional Italian wines with long ageing in old wood to soften the tannins. The idea was to create a powerful wine that would reflect well the DOURO and its vineyards and the 4 years of ageing have not taken away the youth of the Niepoort Robustus, on the contrary, they have added elegance and complexity to the intense aromas of coffee and cigar box that combine with red and black fruit flavors. The balsamic and spicy aromas come from the slate soil. On the palate, the wine develops a broad palette with lots of fruit and a strong mineral character. The structure is supported by well-integrated tannins. Very lively, the Robustus proves itself through its freshness rather than its concentration. Long, seductive and persistent finish.
