Southern Styria is one of Austria's most renowned wine-growing regions, known for its picturesque landscape and high-quality wines. This region is located in the south of the province of Styria, close to the Slovenian border, and is characterized by rolling hills, steep vineyards and a mild climate that offers ideal conditions for viticulture.
The soil in southern Styria is varied and ranges from sandy loam to calcareous soils, which gives the wines a special minerality. The climate is characterized by the Pannonian influence, with hot days and cool nights, which help the grapes to develop optimal ripeness and a distinct aroma spectrum.
The region is particularly well known for its white wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc, which is often referred to as the queen of grape varieties here. These wines are characterized by their freshness, lively acidity and complex aromas, ranging from green notes such as gooseberry and bell pepper to exotic fruits. In addition to Sauvignon Blanc, other varieties such as Welschriesling, Morillon (a local name for Chardonnay) and Gelber Muskateller are also successfully cultivated.
The wineries in Southern Styria are often family-run and combine traditional winemaking techniques with modern know-how. Many winegrowers rely on sustainable cultivation and gentle processing methods to maximize the quality of their wines.
In addition to the wines, Southern Styria is also a popular destination for wine lovers and tourists who travel along the wine roads, visit idyllic wine taverns and enjoy the region's culinary specialties. All in all, Southern Styria offers a perfect combination of wine, nature and enjoyment.
